Wayne Irie’s musical journey began at a very young age, developing a passion for reggae music and sound system culture that would shape a remarkable career spanning decades.
In 1975, Wayne started entertaining crowds with the renowned Merritone Sound System, quickly earning recognition for his natural talent behind the controls. His skills caught the attention of Duke Alloy Sound in 1978, where he was recruited as a selector. During his time with the sound, Wayne helped achieve numerous competition victories, earning several trophies and a prestigious Gold Disc award. The sound’s success became so significant that it was eventually crowned King Alloy, cementing its place in sound system history.
In 1989, Wayne took his talents to Canada, performing alongside Mikey Soul and Sonatone Sound in Malton, Toronto. His unique style and musical expertise quickly gained the respect of Canadian audiences and fellow selectors alike. During this period, he shared stages with some of the most respected names in the industry, including King Turbo, Soul to Soul, and the legendary Downbeat Sound from New York.
Returning to England in 1990, Wayne continued to build his reputation. In 1991, he became a founding force behind New Sensation Sound, a sound system that remains active and respected to this day. Throughout his career, Wayne has performed alongside some of the biggest names in reggae and dancehall culture, including Bodyguard, King Addies, Stone Love, Metro Media, Killamanjaro, Fire Links, Swatch International, Tony Matterhorn, Suzy Q, and many more across the UK and internationally.
Today, Wayne Irie continues to share his love for reggae music through radio, live events, and sound system culture. He extends heartfelt thanks to all promoters, radio DJs, selectors, supporters, friends, and fans who have been part of his musical journey.
