Anthony “Pure Silk” Brightly is a respected British-Caribbean music pioneer, international DJ, broadcaster, producer, and founding member of the legendary reggae band Black Slate. With a career spanning more than five decades, he has played a significant role in shaping and preserving Black British reggae and sound system culture.

Born in Hackney, East London, to Jamaican parents, Anthony grew up surrounded by music through his father, George Brightly, founder of the iconic Sir George Sound System. Inspired by this rich musical heritage, Anthony developed his skills as a musician and performer from an early age before helping to establish Black Slate in 1972.

As the band’s keyboardist, he contributed to some of Black Slate’s most celebrated recordings, including classics such as Amigo, Sticks Man, Mind Your Motion, and Boom Boom. The band toured extensively throughout the UK and Europe, building a reputation as one of Britain’s most influential reggae groups.

Beyond his work with Black Slate, Anthony earned international recognition as DJ “Pure Silk”, becoming a respected selector, presenter, and ambassador for reggae music. He continues to carry forward the legacy of Sir George Sound System while operating Sir George Records, a label responsible for hundreds of releases and the development of numerous artists.

A passionate advocate for reggae heritage, lovers rock, and sound system culture, Anthony regularly shares his knowledge through radio broadcasting, live events, and documentary projects, including For The Love: The Story of UK Lovers Rock.

Today, Anthony “Pure Silk” Brightly remains one of the UK’s most respected figures in reggae music, dedicated to celebrating and preserving the sounds, stories, and culture that have inspired generations.
